The 2 images below were taken at Mühlenstrasse in East Berlin; the longest preserved part of the Berlin Wall.

Before the collapse of the Wall in 1989, the East side of the Berlin Wall was a grey concrete surface. On the West side the Wall was used as an object for painting.

After the Wall was demolished, the section left standing at Mühlenstrasse was given over to artists worldwide to make works that commemerated the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Known as 'The Berlin Wall East Side Gallery', the 1.3km long section of the landscape houses over 100 paintings, making it the largest open air gallery in the world.

Many of the original paintings are fading, cracking and peeling paint. The pictures are covered in a multitude of slogans and grafitti text, creating an everchanging public drawing board of social and political commentry.
