Big Questions
What is the Singularity and when will it occur?,
Spectrum, The Sydney Morning Herald, Dec 23-25,2005, p4
The Sydney Morning Herald, Spectrum, June 29-20, 2002

What is the Singularity and when will it happen?
US scientist Vernor Vinge proposed that humanity is approaching what he called the Singularity: a moment in the future when superhuman intelligences will surpass the capabilities of humankind. In a paper presented at the VISION-21 Symposium (March 30-31, 1993), Vinge said our investigations into artificial intelligence, biological sciences and super intelligences could create a machine that wakes up. He claims we have the scientific potential to create ultra-intelligent machines that leave intelligent man far behind. The Singularity will bring about a change that will involve abandoning previous rules; old models will be discarded and new realities apply. Vinge says computing developments we never thought possible could arise in the 21st century, even within 30 years.
Carla Priivald, Ryde

Carla Priivald's 'Missionary Man' is a political painting that makes Sir Sidney Nolan's Kelly figure sinister and threatening. Sexual aggression, and the lurking danger everpresent within society is the theme of this confronting work, and there are touches of racism and paedophilia. This is a profoundly disturbing painting but one which handles its delicate subject matter confidently. Although rich with pictorial elements and influences, the message is not lessened.
